Your Lungs 101

Your lungs are living air purifiers. They are built to filter out the smallest of gas particles and your life actually depends on your lungs' capacity to efficiently extract the tiniest of gaseous molecules of oxygen from air. This is done about 15-25 times per minute without us even thinking about it. In fact, 9,000 litres of air meets with 10,000 litres of blood in the lungs every day.1

The average person inhales and exhales more than 30,000 times a day and the surface area of the adult lungs is roughly the size of a tennis court. Through the air you breathe at home, at work, or even outside, your lungs filter more than just oxygen. Thousands of tiny particles, often invisible to the human eye, float around in the air. Since breathing is involuntary, you take in roughly two tablespoons of airborne particles a day.2 By not taking steps to purify your indoor air, your lungs are forced to serve as your only air purifier.


About IQAir®

IQAir® started in 1963 when the Hammes brothers, Klaus and Manfred, introduced the world’s first residential air purifier. It was originally designed to remove dust and soot from homes with coal burning stoves. They soon discovered that the people who lived in the homes with their air cleaners saw a considerable change in their own health issues. Manfred, a lifelong asthma suffer noticed the filter reduced his flare-ups during the winter months.

Through the 60s and 70s Klaus, a mechanical engineer by training, adapted the filter for other systems such as baseboard heaters and heating and cooling systems.

In 1998, the first IQAir® system from the Swiss factory was made and received its first major recognition in September of that year. The HealthPro® Plus outperformed all its competitors in one of the most comprehensive air purifier tests done by Stiftung Warentest.

The IQAir® purifiers finally became available in the United States in 2000 and were an instant success with allergy and asthma sufferers. In 2004, IQAir® became official partners in indoor air quality education with the American Lung Association.

Today, IQAir®’s founder, Klaus Hammes, has retired but remains an advisor to the family company that is lead by his two sons, Frank and Jens. Frank splits his time between the Swiss factory and the North America headquarters in California.
